How Technology has Changed Society Part 2

Jan 14, 2015

In a world that is forever evolving and changing, technology has impacted how our society works thanks to the Internet. From finding out information about a person by searching them online or having whatever you desire delivered to your front doorstep, the Internet has impacted us in countless ways. This blog is the 2nd installment of a 3 part series that discusses the ways the Internet has affected how we conduct business and our working lives in general.

Information and our communication in the world today travels faster and faster and this has a significant impact on the way we conduct business. Storing important files on a computer rather than in drawers, for instance, has made information easily accessible. We’re moving into what is becoming known as the CLOUD era. Our thinking is being shaped by the need for more flexible IT infrastructure.

Finding a job today has also changed due to the impact of technology. and are 2 examples of websites that are constantly updating their job listings. You can subscribe to these websites and receive weekly emails on what new jobs are available in your field.  Being well prepared prior to going on a job interview is easier than ever before.  Information about the company (small or large) is readily available online, you can just Google the companies name and voila. Most people aren’t aware that the social media platform LinkedIn originated as a recruitment website before growth accelerated and it became an online sharing platform as well.

Person to person networking still exists but the online social media platforms have given us a way to manage our business relationships from the comfort of our own home or office. The importance of relationship building in business is crucial today more than ever. You can grow those relationships by engaging with people in your network online. In todays society liking or commenting on a post can be just as effective as taking someone out for lunch or meeting them for a quick meeting. This can be negative or positive, since these platforms lessen the amount of in person social interactions. But, at the same time, it allows someone to build relationships much faster.

There are negatives and positives to the way business and the workforce have changed through technology. Remember too that taking a step back sometimes to get a broader view of things is good as well. It’s still important to have face-to-face interactions with others and not let the Internet affect those social interactions.  Despite all of this, it’s important to remember that in a very competitive world, you can’t afford to let people who understand how to best leverage technology end up getting the job you deserve.
